Information just in - I have heard from reliable sources that the artist Tadashi Kawamata will be the Director of the 2005 Yokohama Triennale. After a dramatic week of public resignations and rumour this news at least brings some focus into the situation. However, it remains un-clear who or how this decision was reached - who decides these things and with what kind of criteria? I heard that the initial appointment of Arata Isozaki was made by a committee of art professionals and organisers - if Mr. Kawamata has been chosen, it is important to ask how this was done and in what way. This situation of back-room decision-making rather reminds me of the appointment of Prime Minister Mori after the sudden death of Mr. Obuchi. The Triennale is a public event, using public money - the least we can ask of the organisers is to make their decision-making process a little more public and open to scrutiny.
