Rei Naito is currently showing new drawings and small scale objects at Gallery Koyanagi`s new space in the Ginza. Known for her intricate installations of found objects, lights and fragments, Naito`s new exhibition is concentrated around a series of tiny hanging pieces of paper punctured by tiny pin holes, so that viewers can peer through them and see what is beyond faintly.
On the walls are almost invisible drawings, very faint traces of colours which gradually fade in and out of perception like a kind of very slow op-art. The hanging pieces have the effect of making you pay attention to where you are, as it is easy to walk into them. Together with the drawings, this creates a highly charged space where the viewer is asked to engage with each work, spend time and remain alert. Eight floors up from the commercial bustle of the Ginza shopping street below, this somehow seemed appropriate - a different kind of shopping which slows the blood and eye, and makes you wonder whether there is really anything there in front of you. Gallery Koyanagi has no website. The exhibition closes May 14.
Hello Roger,
Hmmm, I am often a great fan of Rei Naito's work--not often is the exception. The brief description, coming from here, is good. By the way, are you at all up on what Eri Takayanagi is doing these days? She is another exquisite mind who can bring to attention our own sense of presence.
