It is my birthday today, and I experienced an epiphany on the way home tonight. As usual I got on theTokyu Toyoko line train at Daikanyama and began to listen to a track on my i-pod. I chose to listen to a raga called 'Jhinjhoti' played by the sitarist Ustad Shahid Parvez (a CD I bought in Little India in Singapore). The track is 19 minutes long, and it had the effect of making me highly sensitive and aware of my surroundings. I have had similar experiences before listening to Indian ragas. Perhaps a combination of circumstances and emotions lined up at this particular moment to initiate the feeling of intense awareness, triggered by the raga. The strange thing was that the raga ended the moment I entered home and the door closed behind me. I remember reading about similar experiences during my study of mysticism at Kent. I am only happy to have experienced such a state again.
Dear Roger,
Isn't this what Freud called -unheimliche- "inquiétante étrangeté" ("disturbing strangeness" in english) ?
Happy birthday.
In friendship
