Sakamoto Ryoma's Boots

Sakamoto Ryoma (3 Jan 1836 - 10 Dec 1867) was a leader of the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa Bakufu. He wore ankle length elasticated leather boots, apparently because it prevented him from slipping on the wet decks of ships.
