One of the best exhibitions I have been to in quite some time.
I fully agree with Meese's manifestos and slogans. His slogans for art as Baby, Moomins, Metabolism, Dictatorship echo crystalline in my mind. Kurz put it like this: "...like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead."
His paintings drip with excreta-like oil blobs, gentle Impressionist colours battle with Expressionist jerks and twitches, faces are in the midst of catastrophic expansions and slurpy revolutions, pants and toilet rolls and toothbrushes drowning in sputum goo, everything just about holds itself together, the heaviest trip which laps in and out of Heaven and Hell. Letting them into your eyes and mind quietly and with discipline takes you somewhere close. Paintings are really very strange things - whatever their status in the market or within recent vogues for community/ activist art, a fine painting does something quite special, if allowed to with generosity and discipline.
